Being Legal Isn’t Being Right

Nigeria has 3.3 million persons displaced by conflict – the highest number in Africa.

These persons no longer have an identity, have no place to call their own; and live from day-to-

day waiting for the next meal. No hopes, no aspirations, no dreams, no future to look forward to.

Do you understand the hopelessness and despair they live with on a daily basis? Imagine their

joy at being resettled; given a place of their own, schools for their children, jobs, in essence an

opportunity to rebuild their lives.

I will be explaining shortly how multinational organizations, avoid paying taxes, stay on the right

side of the law and continuously reduce the chance of normal, healthy lives for our IDPs.

Developed by the most intelligent of accountants, this is one of the diseases that crush third

world economies such as ours.

I will be explaining with a research carried out by Premium Times Nigeria. In 2013, MTN

transferred N11.398 Billion from MTN Nigeria to MTN Dubai.

In 2013, the telecommunications giant admitted it had paid an unauthorized total of N37.6

Billion to MTN Dubai “a shell company with zero number of staff, and which physical presence

in the capital Port Louis is nothing more than a post office letter box”

What MTN Nigeria did, was to move their profits offshore (legally I might add), leaving behind

very little profit to be taxed, cheating our government of revenues, our ordinary citizens of a

better life and taking away that shot of life our IDPs are entitled to.

You should be aware, You should know our country isn’t as hopeless as they make it seem. Let

us together call out these corporations to stop avoiding tax, they might have found a way to make

it legal, but it will never be right.
